About Me

My name is Mercy Neumark and I am a part time functional potter and sculptor, living on the West Coast of the US. It's been over 20 years since I became a ceramicist, coming from a mostly illustration and 2-D art world. Ceramics was a large departure from my self studies and fan work and it's taken this long to really come full circle, embracing my 2-D drawings onto my pots and vessels.

Inspiration comes from many places for me. Growing up in the US, I was immersed in Comic Books, Vintage Cartoons, Sci-Fi, Horror and Anime. Drawing from these influences, my own style has evolved into a mix of dark whimsy and quirk.

Sticking to one technique or style isn't exactly in my DNA, however, over time my sgraffito and collage work has bubbled up to the surface. Historical ceramics have been a major influence over my career. No doubt all the German stoneware, Byzantine sgraffito and English Puzzle jugs have provided an interesting jump off point of skills.
